Frequently the reader is left in the uncomfortable position of knowing the recent past whereas Maud doesnt. ELIZABETH IS MISSING is not only a well-told mystery novel its a heartbreaking deeply empathetic story about how whatever memories and freedoms are lost in old age friendship and loyalty can still remain. Maud the narrator is unreliable due to her dementia which seems to worsen through the story but is the most delightfully sweet character.
At first Mauds disintegrating memory stymies her progress but soon enough the elision of boundaries becomes an asset. And then Maud finds the note again and the cycle re-starts. Whatever it takes I suppose.
